What You Need to Know About the Truck Cartel

The truck manufacturers MAN, Daimler, Volvo/Renault, Iveco, and DAF admitted, as part of a settlement with the European Commission, that they were involved in the truck cartel. Only Scania did not participate in the settlement and instead challenged the fine decision in the European courts. On 1 February 2024, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled definitively that Scania was rightly fined approximately €880 million for its participation in the truck cartel. This confirms that Scania was involved in the cartel and is liable for all resulting damages. During the legal proceedings against Scania, the statute of limitations for claims against the company was suspended and therefore did not apply.

In practical terms: although claims against the other cartel members may already have expired, all claims against Scania can still be asserted today — regardless of whether it concerns a Scania truck or a truck from MAN, Daimler, Volvo/Renault, DAF, or Iveco. While it is difficult to predict the enforceability of compensation claims, a payout of at least 5% of the purchase price per truck, plus interest, is considered realistic.

  • Due to the joint and several liability of the individual cartel members, you can assert your compensation claims against DAF, Daimler, Renault/Volvo, or Iveco also against Scania.
